“Hip to be Square” is perhaps best known these days for its part in the movie American Psycho, during a scene in which Patrick Bateman dances to the song while killing a colleague with an axe. He spends a lengthy period of time discussing Huey Lewis and the News with his unwilling captive before attacking, noting “Hip to be Square” as (in his opinion) their greatest masterpiece.

The song was also included on the original soundtrack at first, though first printings of the album had to be taken from the shelves as the filmmakers hadn’t bought the rights to use the film on the soundtrack, only to use it in the movie. Some postulated at the time that Lewis objected to its use within the movie itself, however this wasn’t the case.
“Cruisin” is a 2000 song performed by Gwyneth Paltrow and Huey Lewis as a cover for the film Duets. It appears on its own single as well as the movie soundtrack, and did extremely well on the charts, hitting number one in Australian and number nine on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles.

Huey Lewis was not the creator of the song, however. It was first recorded decades prior in 1979 by Smokey Robinson, and proved one of his best selling solo singles. It was included on Robinson’s ninth record, Where There’s Smoke…, and managed to peak at number four on the Billboard Hot 100.

“Cruisin” plays a part in the actual action of Duets as Lewis and Paltrow sing it together on-stage.

Sure, Huey Lewis was the man of choice for back to the Future. But did you know he and his band were almost also responsible for the theme song to Ghostbusters, as well?

It’s true. Apparently Huey Lewis & The News were offered the opportunity to write the song for the now-hit movie. They turned down the offer, however, and the spot went to Ray Parker Jr. instead.

And that’s where the controversy begins. Upon hearing the resulting theme, Lewis and his band mates exclaimed loudly that Parker had ripped off one of their earlier songs, “I Want A New Drug”. Lewis threatened Parker with a lawsuit and they eventually settled out of court.

But it doesn’t end there. After admitting that the popularity of Ghostbusters is probably what led the band to make the theme for Back to the Future, Lewis made another comment about the debacle - one that saw Parker counter-suing Lewis for breach of a confidentiality agreement. This case is ongoing.

Whether he outright copied the song or not, Parker’s theme certainly does bear an incredible resemblance to “I Want A New Drug”.

The story of a teenager (played by Michael J. Fox) and his relationship with an eccentric yet kind-hearted professor (played by Christopher Lloyd) as they time-travel back and forth through the ages, trying to repair the damage they’ve caused. And since Fox’s character is a musician and overall fan of music, a number of songs figure largely into the equation.

Most prominent is the Power of Love Huey Lewis, played in all three films but prominently featured in just one: the first. It is this song that Fox and his band play in an attempt to strike it big at their school, and subsequently becomes background music several other times in the movie.

Huey Lewis is a 50-year-old songwriter and actor perhaps best known for his part in the Back to the Future soundtrack, and Gwyneth Paltrow is a highly acclaimed award-winning actress of over 30 movies. Put together in the same place they’re sure to come up with something magical.

And they did. The result was a musically-oriented movie called Duets, whose primary subject is the little-known world of karaoke contests. Lewis plays the role of a karaoke hustler on the road, and Paltrow his daughter Liv who decides after years of estrangement that she wants to tag along with her father.

Though the film received mixed reviews it is still a favorite of many, and led to Paltrow and Lewis performing in a real duet together – a cover of the classic song Cruisin’, which managed to climb to the top of the charts despite never actually being released as a single.
